Swan (Hepzibah Clarke) is born in Boston.
January 3, 1757
The daughter of a wealthy merchant, Hepzibah Swan grows up on Bromfield Street (then Rawson’s Lane), marries Col. James Swan in 1775, moves to the former Stephen Greenleaf House near today’s 140 Tremont Street (then Common Street) and builds a summer home in Dorchester in 1796.* While raising four children and with a husband who spends much of his life in France, “Madame Swan,” becomes the only woman member of the Mount Vernon Proprietors and a leading figure in Boston business and society. She dies in Dorchester on August 14, 1825. After being buried initially in a tomb on her estate, her remains are subsequently moved to Forest Hills Cemetery.
